Birth and Family:

Born in Enugu, Nigeria, on the 25th of December, 1957 to the family of late Mr & Mrs Nathan and Salomey Igbo, of Inyi Town in Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria; as third child in the family of 8 children.

Education & Qualifications:

Attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) (1988-1999); University of Jos (1985-1986; & 1978-1982), and earned the Ph.D., MSc. and BSc. Degrees in Sociology respectively, with specialization in Criminology; Corpus Christi College Achi(1971-1975) WASC (Grade II); and St. Luke’s Primary School, Enugu (FSLS).

University Teaching Career:

Began my University Teaching career as Assistant Lecturer in Sociology in September 1987 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.Also taught at Caritas University Emene-Enugu, and Ebonyi State Univeristy, Abakaliki. Was appointed Professor in 2010 at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (Niger State University), Nigeria, where I currently teach Sociology/Criminology.

Positions Held/Academic Leadership Roles:

I have served variously as Head of Department of Sociology at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Head of Department of Sociology, Caritas University, Emene-Enugu; Head of Department of Sociology & Anthropology Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; and Dean, Faculty of Management & Social Sciences, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. I have also served as External Examiner to Kogi State University, Anyigba (Undergraduate programme), and University of Port-Harcourt (Post-graduate programme); I have served at various times as Chairman, and as Member, National Universities Commission (NUC) Ad-Hoc Accreditation Panel to Nigerian Universities for the accreditation of Degree programmes in Social Science. I have also served as Chairman, and as Member, in various Senate Committees of Universities where I have taught including IBB University; and have served as Visiting Professor to Kogi State University, Anyingba and Nasarawa State University, Keffi. Other positions and roles I have played are: Temporary Adviser to World Health Organization SER Conference in Tropical Diseases Research 1991; and Research Consultant to International Center for Development Affairs (ICDA), New York/Lagos.

Academic Output/Publications:

I authored three academic text books in Sociology and Criminology which are widely used in Nigerian Universities, namely: Basic Sociology; Criminology: A Basic Introduction; and etiology of Crime: Perspectives in Theoretical Criminology; and also co-edited another text book entitled Theories in Adult Education. I have published several articles/papers in peer-reviewed academic journals; and have attended seminars/workshops and conferences both locally and internationally.I delivered my Professorial Inaugural Lecture entitled Addressing Crime and Insecurity in Nigeria on 6th August, 2016 at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (Inaugural Lectures Series 4).
